It was a spectacular crisp winter day in Farran Park and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky as the 4th annual South Stormont Pond Hockey tournament got underway on the frozen St. Lawrence River. The event was a complete success as a record number of 22 teams strapped on the blades and skated in one of three divisions, each one seeking that elusive championship along with the accompanying bragging rights.

The big winner of this year’s Pond Hockey tournament was the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. As has become the tradition of the South Stormont event, the tournament’s proceeds go to a regional health care centre and CHEO was the 2008 designated recipient, gaining a sizeable, but yet-to-be-determined donation from the event’s organizing committee.

Without exception, the dozens of players showered organizers with praise for an outstanding competition, all played under picture-perfect conditions in South Stormont’s beautiful waterfront park. Support for the day was plentiful, headed up by local construction firm H&J Windmill Construction, the tournament’s Platinum Sponsor along with the many other sponsors listed below.

This year’s tourney became a truly international affair with a team coming all the way from New Jersey as well as some team members arriving from across the International Bridge in Massena, New York. Event Chair, Tim Cryderman was delighted with both the number of participating teams and the effort put forth by the many volunteers.

“Everyone on the committee did their part to make the tournament a success,” reports Cryderman. “We take our hats off to the many sponsors whose funding support allowed us to plan and present this growing community event and a special thanks South Stormont Township’s Dan Pilon and his Public Works staff for the incredible job they did in getting the ice ready on time. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Organizers are already looking ahead to the 2009 tournament and are convinced it will be even bigger and better. “Each year, we’ve expanded the tournament and added new wrinkles,” says Cryderman. “As we look ahead to next year, we believe the event is going to significant grow and we anticipate well over 30 teams to come on board with even greater international participation.”
